「日本一若者を応援するまち」を掲げる北九州市とJR西日本の協働により、小倉駅新幹線口1階に国内では類を見ない駅構内ダンス・スペース「KOKURA DANCE STATION」が実現。若者の活動を後押しし、駅周辺に新たな賑わいを生み出す本プロジェクトにて、デザインを担当。

本プロジェクトでは、「鉄のまち」北九州のアイデンティティを反映するため、かつてボルダリングウォールの一部だった鉄骨を活かし、新たな金属フレームを加えて空間を再構築。ビビッドなブルーの手すりや、床のブルーとイエローのラインが、空間に躍動的なリズムを与えている。

ポリカーボネート・パネルと組み合わせたLEDライン照明の柔らかな光によって、かつて薄暗かったエリアは一新され、人々が自然と集う開かれたパブリック空間へと生まれ変わった。

このスペースが、地域の若者にとって身近な存在となり、「ここで踊りたい」と思わせる憧れの場所となること。そして、未来の世界的ダンサーを数多く輩出する“聖地”となることを目指している。

私たちは、地域の歴史や記憶を大切にしながら、次世代を担う若者たちの夢と可能性を応援する空間づくりに、今後も取り組んでまいります。

Aligned with Kitakyushu City’s vision to become the “Number One City for Supporting Youth in Japan,” and in cooperation with JR West and Kitakyushu City, we designed an unprecedented and unique public dance space, “KOKURA DANCE STATION”, within Kokura Station, supporting young people’s activities and brings new vibrancy to the station area.

Reflecting Kitakyushu’s identity as the “Steel City,” the project repurposes steel frames from a former bouldering wall, combining them with new metal frameworks to redefine the space. Vivid blue handrails and graphic floor lines in blue and yellow create a visual rhythm that resonates with the movement of dance.

Soft, diffused LED linear lighting, concealed behind polycarbonate panels, has transformed what was once a quiet and dim area into an open, inviting public space.

Our goal is for this space to become a familiar yet aspirational place – a cultural hub and a “sanctuary” for dancers – where future world-class dancers from Kitakyushu can take their first steps.
